Faeto, the village of beech trees

In the heart of the Alta Valle del Celone, Faeto is one of the most fascinating and distinctive medieval villages in the Monti Dauni of inland Puglia (Apulia). Nestled on the slopes of Monte Chilone, on the border between Puglia and Campania, the village captivates visitors with its authentic atmosphere, shaped by silence, nature, and ancient traditions preserved through the centuries. The historic village of Faeto is a place where culture, landscape, and memory still coexist in harmony.

Surrounded by more than 150 hectares of beech, oak, and Turkey oak forests, Faeto offers sweeping views over the valleys of Daunia and nature trails ideal for lovers of slow tourism and walking routes through the Monti Dauni, including the Via Francigena. The Bosco Difesa, with its springs and paths winding among centuries-old trees, is one of the most authentic symbols of the area.

The history of Faeto and Franco-Provençal culture

The history of Faeto dates back to the 13th century, when Provençal soldiers sent by King Charles I of Anjou settled in these lands. From that encounter emerged one of the region’s most distinctive cultural identities. To this day, the community preserves its Franco-Provençal language and traditions, a heritage that links the villages of Faeto and Celle di San Vito in a unique cultural enclave within the Alta Valle del Celone.

Nature, traditions, and authentic flavours of the Monti Dauni

Walking through the historic centre, visitors encounter narrow alleyways, stone arches, ancient gateways, and picturesque corners that tell the story of the village and its medieval architecture. The stone houses of Faeto, together with the Mother Church of the Most Holy Saviour, reflect the simple and authentic spirit of the community.

Blending nature, culture, and traditional flavours, Faeto offers an immersive experience built on small details, local customs, and regional specialties such as the renowned Faeto ham, a symbol of the gastronomy of Puglia and the Monti Dauni.
