Petrera Pine Forest: the woods at the gates of Castelluccio Valmaggiore

A wood in the heart of the Monti Dauni

The Petrera is a woodland dominated by characteristic Aleppo pines, a species adapted to the soils of the Daunian Apennines, which gives the wood the dense, shady character that makes it ideal for walks in the warmer months. The paths through the pine forest make for pleasant walks in nature. The area is also popular with walkers and outdoor enthusiasts and has a fitness trail, alongside spaces for resting and leisure.

The Petrera also has equipped picnic areas, a real invitation to slow down, bring something to eat and stay longer than planned, and a large children’s play area, making the wood a destination for the whole family. For visitors from elsewhere, this is one of those places that gives exactly what it promises: quiet, shade and fresh air.

The Ponte del Freddo and the Waterfalls: history and nature at a glance

On the edge of the pine forest stands one of the most characteristic structures of the territory: the Ponte del Freddo, a round-arched bridge with a carved-stone face. Its discreet but solid presence tells of an old road network that linked these villages of the Alta Valle del Celone long before asphalt roads arrived.

Near the bridge, an access path leads to the Waterfalls of the Freddo stream, small cascades surrounded by vegetation and particularly striking when the stream is in full flow. Whether they can be reached depends on the state of the ground and the stream. A detail many do not expect, which turns an ordinary walk into a small discovery.

Trekking and walking: from the Petrera towards Monte Cornacchia

For those who want to go beyond woodland walks, the Petrera Pine Forest lies on one of the hiking routes leading from Castelluccio Valmaggiore towards Monte Sidone and Monte Cornacchia, at 1,151 metres the highest peak in Puglia. The route crosses different settings, alternating woodland, country roads and panoramic stretches, and reveals a significant part of the mountain landscape of the Monti Dauni. The distances and height gains do, however, require adequate preparation.

The Petrera also lies within the territory crossed by the Sentiero Frassati of Puglia, the loop hiking route linking Roseto Valfortore, Biccari, Castelluccio Valmaggiore, Celle di San Vito and Faeto. Opened in 2011 on the initiative of the Italian Alpine Club, the route crosses woods, rural landscapes and historic villages of the Monti Dauni, combining the discovery of nature with getting to know local communities.
