Petrera Pine Forest: the woodland just outside Castelluccio Valmaggiore
Just beyond the village walls, along the road leading to Faeto, the landscape changes completely. The sound of footsteps on cobblestones gives way to the soft forest floor, rooftops disappear among the branches, and the air becomes cooler and fresher. Welcome to the Petrera Pine Forest in Castelluccio Valmaggiore: around 20 hectares of woodland in the heart of the Monti Dauni, where nature reveals itself without crowds or distractions.
A forest in the heart of the Monti Dauni
The Petrera is a woodland dominated by characteristic Aleppo pines, a species well adapted to the soils of the Dauni Apennines, giving the forest its dense, shaded character and making it ideal for walks during the warmer months. The trails that cross the woodland are easy and well marked, suitable both for those looking for a relaxing stroll and for hikers using them as the starting point for more demanding excursions.
The Petrera also features equipped picnic areas, inviting visitors to slow down, bring something to eat and stay longer than planned, as well as a large children’s playground, making the forest a destination for the whole family. For visitors arriving from elsewhere, this is one of those places that delivers exactly what it promises: peace, shade, and fresh air.
The Ponte del Freddo and the Waterfalls: history and nature in a single view
On the edge of the pine forest stands one of the area’s most distinctive architectural landmarks: the Ponte del Freddo, a full-arched bridge with a finely carved stone façade. Its quiet yet solid presence tells the story of an ancient route that connected the villages of the Alta Valle del Celone long before paved roads existed.
Near the bridge, a recently restored path descends below road level and leads to the Freddo Waterfalls: a cascade nestled among the vegetation, reached by a short detour from the main trail. It is a feature many visitors do not expect, transforming an ordinary walk into a memorable discovery.
Hiking and walking routes: from the Petrera to Monte Cornacchia
For hikers with their boots already on, the Petrera Pine Forest also serves as the starting point for the area’s more challenging hiking trails. From here, it is possible to head towards Monte Cornacchia, the highest peak in Puglia (Apulia), following routes that cross forests and ridgelines while gradually revealing sweeping views of the Apennines.
The Petrera is also included among the stages of the Sentiero Frassati in Puglia, the pilgrimage route linking sanctuaries and villages across the Dauni Apennines. Those following the trail find in this woodland a natural resting place, where the spiritual dimension of the journey meets the tangible beauty of the surrounding landscape.
