Every year on 16 August, Castelluccio Valmaggiore celebrates San Rocco Confessore (St Roch the Confessor), co-patron of the village and an important figure in its religious tradition. The festivities, which usually continue on 17 August, are among the most heartfelt events of the Castelluccio summer. Alongside the religious celebrations there are musical events and gatherings involving residents and those who return to the village for the holidays.
Anyone arriving in Castelluccio Valmaggiore at this time finds a village in celebration. 16 August is a date rooted in the village’s identity, linked to devotion to San Rocco Confessore, traditionally invoked as a protector against plague and epidemic disease. A devotion that, in Castelluccio Valmaggiore too, has taken on a special meaning in the community’s history.
San Rocco in Castelluccio: the story of a cult and a church
Devotion to San Rocco is deeply rooted in the history of Castelluccio Valmaggiore. The saint, traditionally venerated as the protector of plague victims, was also invoked against the diseases that threatened livestock and rural communities. According to local historical accounts, the cult grew particularly important between the 17th and 18th centuries, when epidemics and infectious diseases were a constant danger to the population and the farming economy.
The age of this devotion is also borne out by the history of the Church of San Rocco. The original building, whose founding date is not known for certain, was demolished in 1952 because it was unsafe. During works carried out in 1972 a stone inscription dated 1787 was found, recording the restoration of an altar dedicated to the saint thanks to contributions from the people.
The discovery helped to renew interest in rebuilding the church, which was carried out later. The present building therefore keeps its link with an older place of worship, even though it is not physically the original structure. Today, during the festivities of 16 August, the Church of San Rocco once again becomes one of the main focal points of Castelluccio’s devotion.
The procession and rites of 16 August
The most significant moment of the religious celebrations is the procession in honour of San Rocco, traditionally held on 16 August. The statue of the saint is carried through the village streets accompanied by the faithful, renewing a devotion that has belonged to the Castelluccio community for generations.
The feast also includes gatherings and civic events organised with the involvement of the Patronal Feasts Committee, local associations and the municipal administration. Music traditionally plays an important part, with band concerts and shows that enliven the days dedicated to the co-patron.
The programme may change from year to year and can include musical entertainment and fireworks. What remains constant is the meaning of the occasion, which unites the community in its devotion to San Rocco and, for many people from Castelluccio who live far away, is a chance to return to their home village.
Handmade pasta and the festivals of the Castelluccio summer
August is particularly full of events in Castelluccio Valmaggiore. In the days leading up to the feast of San Rocco, the summer calendar offers cultural events, music shows and initiatives dedicated to traditional food.
Among these an important place goes to the Sagra della Pasta a Mano (Handmade Pasta Festival), organised by the Pro Loco of Castelluccio Valmaggiore and dedicated to the tradition of fresh, hand-worked pasta. The festival serves various dishes of the local cuisine, from orecchiette with ragù to taccunette with chickpeas, cicatelli with beans and pasta with tomato and ricotta marzotica. A variety of shapes and sauces that tells of the village’s home cooking and of knowledge handed down through the generations.
The closeness of the food events to the celebrations of San Rocco on 16 and 17 August helps make this one of the liveliest times of the year. Each event, however, keeps its own identity: the food festival celebrates the culinary tradition, while the feast of the co-patron keeps its religious and community meaning.
Why come to Castelluccio Valmaggiore on 16 August
August patronal feasts in the Monti Dauni are nothing like the big summer events of the coast or the cities. They are village-sized occasions where outside visitors are warmly welcomed and can watch a community moving to its own rhythms.
For those who enjoy slow travel in the inland villages of Puglia, the feast of San Rocco is exactly the kind of experience that is hard to replicate: a religious occasion that comes together with the flavours, music, architecture and landscape of the same place.
Castelluccio Valmaggiore lies in the Daunian Subapennines, in the province of Foggia, and forms the Alta Valle del Celone together with Celle di San Vito and Faeto. Visiting during the San Rocco festivities can also be a chance to discover the historic centre, the medieval landmarks and the landscapes of this part of the Monti Dauni.
