Originally dating from around 1800, the wash-house is now covered by a wide cross vault built in 1927, which gives the site a restrained but imposing elegance and blends perfectly with its urban setting.

Equally interesting is the system that feeds the wash-house. Its water, which once flowed far more abundantly than today, comes directly from natural springs in the hills just above the village. 

The water arrives through a narrow, L-shaped tunnel about 40 metres long, which channels it right into the stone basins.

Built next to the historic “Porta del Piscero”, a gate that no longer exists, the site enriches the picture of the old wash-houses of Puglia, bearing witness to a time when the management of shared water was the hub around which the whole life of the village turned.

Beyond its undeniable architectural value, the Piscero is the guardian of the village’s intangible heritage. Before washing machines arrived, this was the real social centre of the village: the favourite meeting place of women who, while doing the laundry, exchanged gossip, news and songs, forging relationships that bound the community together.

Tradition has it that only after drinking its water can an outsider truly consider themselves a castelluccese.
