Near Piazza della Libertà, in the historic centre of Castelluccio Valmaggiore, stands one of the quietest and most meaningful places in the whole village: the Monument to the War Dead. Inaugurated on 1 November 1999, it is a work that does not merely commemorate: it tells, embraces and protects.

The structure: simple in form, profound in meaning

The semicircular wall and the marble stele

The designer created a deliberately essential work. Its crowning structure is a semicircular wall clad in slabs of pale stone from the local “La Petrera” quarry: a meaningful choice that recalls the tradition of the local stonemasons and celebrates the rural architecture and local stone of the Monti Dauni. At the centre of the area is the memorial plaque, set into the semicircular wall and framed by a simple structure in pale stone. Its sober layout focuses attention on the inscription and the names of the fallen, making memory the true visual heart of the monument.

The 45-square-metre area is covered in gravel, on which rest stone blocks of different shapes and sizes, like fragments of an inner landscape.

Form as metaphor

The semicircular plan is not decorative. In the designer’s own words, that curve is the community’s symbolic embrace of its fallen: an architectural gesture that makes the monument a place of collective reflection, not rhetorical display. It is this concrete symbolism that makes the site one of the most authentic points of interest among the villages to discover in Puglia’s inland areas.

History on the plaque: from the Great War to the Centenary

Names, memory, renewal

Historical records show that an earlier memorial plaque existed, no longer present in the form described by 20th-century sources. Today the monument holds a more recent plaque commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, bearing the name of the Municipality of Castelluccio Valmaggiore and paying tribute to those who died or went missing in the wars and in the Resistance. Alongside the names of the fallen of 1915–1918 and 1935–1945, the plaque also remembers the soldiers and workers who died in the service of their country.

The present plaque features at the top a reference to the colours of the Italian flag and, at the bottom, the outline of the peninsula, elements that underline the civic and national character of the commemoration.

This place is therefore also a living historical document, directly linked to the history of the two world wars and the Resistance, but above all to the lives of the families of Castelluccio Valmaggiore, whose names are carved in stone and entrusted to the memory of future generations.

Behind the monument rises a poplar, deliberately chosen by the designer as a natural and symbolic presence: the tree of remembrance which, in tradition, represents eternal rest. The poplar behind the monument strengthens the symbolic value of the whole and recalls the idea of the tree of remembrance, in which nature and memory are intertwined in one commemorative space. The Tree of Remembrance of Castelluccio Valmaggiore is today an inseparable part of the monument’s identity: nature guarding memory, green merging with pale stone in a silent dialogue between the time of the living and that of the fallen.
