It is one of those villages you do not pass through by chance: you come here on purpose, drawn by curiosity about the inland areas of Puglia that lie outside the coastal tourist circuits. Its stone houses, the irregular outline of the historic centre and the narrow lanes climbing towards the tower all speak of a community that has taken root in a landscape both harsh and generous.

The Valle del Celone Museum System: an idea born underground

It all began in the summer of 2011, during excavations for a gas pipeline. The works brought to light finds of extraordinary historical importance: that was when the idea arose of building something more than a simple museum. The goal became to create an integrated museum system, able to bring archaeological, historical-architectural and natural evidence together in a single story, without the artificial boundaries that often separate fields of knowledge.

The Valle del Celone Museum System opened on 3 August 2018. Its philosophy is clear: from the discovery of a single object you can trace the dynamics of an entire territory, its natural resources, the peoples who lived there and the choices those resources imposed or made possible. An approach that refreshes the static idea of a museum display and turns it into a living experience.

What to see: finds, reconstructions and accessibility

Inside the museum, visitors find finds, three-dimensional models, display cases and reconstructions that guide them in reading the territory through time. 

The archaeological section holds material from local excavations, including finds attributable to the Daunian culture, while the natural history section tells of the physical landscape of the Celone valley, its species, its seasonal cycles and the relationship between environment and human settlement.

Alongside these is an educational section with modern equipment, designed to bring younger generations closer to local history. 

One detail deserves attention: the descriptions of the finds are also written in Braille, making the museum accessible to blind visitors. A concrete gesture of inclusion that reflects the care with which the project was conceived.

The Byzantine Tower and the Meta Museo

The museum system does not end within the walls of the main museum. The Byzantine Tower of Castelluccio Valmaggiore houses the Meta Museo, an exhibition space devoted to finds connected with the Battle of Cannae: one of the best-known battles of ancient history, fought in 216 BC, which a local theory places not far from here. Visiting the tower means physically climbing into the history of the territory, reading the landscape from above and understanding why this spot was strategic in the Middle Ages.

The system is completed by the Nature Observatory and the Casa del Parco, facilities that extend the itinerary into the environmental dimension and open the project to the municipalities of the whole Celone valley. The stated aim is to build a shared model for promoting the territory: only by coordinating efforts, as the project’s programme document says, will it be possible to guarantee a sustainable future for this valley.
