Castelluccio Valmaggiore, the gateway to the Alta Valle del Celone

Castelluccio Valmaggiore is one of the most centrally representative villages of the Alta Valle del Celone, among the communities of the Monti Dauni that, still to this day, maintain a strong connection with the landscape and local history. Walking through its streets, visitors encounter stone houses, medieval remains, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the valley. Those wondering what to see in Castelluccio Valmaggiore will discover a village where nature, memory, and everyday life continue to coexist in an authentic way.

The historic centre preserves the identity of one of Puglia’s (Apulia’s) lesser-known medieval villages, with its stone houses, scenic views, and examples of the ancient rural architecture of the Monti Dauni. Overlooking the village is the Civic Tower, the last remaining structure of the ancient Byzantine castle that once watched over the valley. Beyond it, the landscape opens towards the Bosco del Monte Sidone, the Celone River, and the Freddo Stream, ideal destinations for those who enjoy slow tourism, hiking, and walking routes through the Monti Dauni.

The Pietralonga Geosite and the Celone Valley Museum tell the story of Castelluccio Valmaggiore and the communities that have inhabited these lands, bringing together culture, history, and nature.

Traditions, flavours, and culture in the villages of the Monti Dauni

Here, every journey is also a journey through local flavours and traditions. The traditional cuisine of the Monti Dauni is closely connected to the cultural heritage shared with Faeto and Celle di San Vito, through farming recipes, authentic local products, and ancient knowledge handed down over generations. Visiting Castelluccio Valmaggiore means enjoying authentic experiences, following the Via Francigena, and allowing the landscapes, stories, and atmosphere to reveal everything that makes the Alta Valle del Celone unique.
