At the highest point of Castelluccio Valmaggiore, where a Byzantine castle once stood guard over the valley, rises the Church of San Giovanni Battista (St John the Baptist), patron of the village and the centre of its religious and community life. It is not just a place of worship: it is the living memory of a territory that has turned its ruins into identity.
For visitors to Castelluccio Valmaggiore, this church is one of the most meaningful starting points for understanding the authentic character of this corner of the Alta Valle del Celone.
From the castle foundations to the parish church
The history of the building is inseparable from that of the site it stands on. The church literally rises on the ruins of the old Byzantine castle, whose ancient tower still stands alongside it, built centuries ago as a lookout over the Celone valley. The tower is no decorative detail: it is a fragment of history that tells of the medieval era of inland Puglia, when these Daunian heights were a military outpost and a frontier.
The parish church dedicated to San Giovanni Battista was solemnly consecrated on 25 June 1769 by Monsignor Marco De Simone, Bishop of Troia. The historic building was later demolished and rebuilt in the 1950s, keeping its role as the spiritual and identity landmark of the Castelluccio Valmaggiore community, deeply attached to its patron saint.
The architecture: brick, stained glass and filtered light
The present building, rebuilt in 1958, is in exposed brick, with a main nave measuring 32 by 10 metres, a trussed roof and a single altar. The structure is plain, as befits a village church in the Monti Dauni, but not without details that catch the eye.
The stained-glass windows: scenes of light from the life of Jesus
The five illustrated stained-glass windows are among the most striking features of the interior. Light passing through the coloured panels casts scenes from the life of Jesus onto the walls and floor, creating an atmosphere that is both intimate and visually eloquent. Above the altar, the organ and the windows merge into a single composition that draws the eye upwards.
The chapel of San Giovanni and the bronze Stations of the Cross
On the left side of the nave is the chapel dedicated to San Giovanni Battista, with a marble altar and the image of the saint at its centre. On the right side stands out the bronze Way of the Cross on onyx marble, a work remarkable for its materials and expressive power.
24 June: the feast of San Giovanni Battista
Every year, on 24 and 25 June, Castelluccio Valmaggiore gathers around its patron saint. The patronal feast is one of those occasions when Apulian popular religion shows itself in its most genuine form: processions, popular devotion, songs and rites handed down from generation to generation.
For those who enjoy slow travel in the Monti Dauni, attending this celebration means coming into direct contact with the soul of the village, far from staged folklore and close to the real life of the community.
A stop along the trails, a resting place in the territory
The Church of San Giovanni Battista is not isolated from its surroundings. Castelluccio Valmaggiore is part of the inland areas of the Monti Dauni.
Those walking the trails that cross the Daunian Subapennines can find in this church a meaningful place to pause, one that adds depth to any route.
The village, its churches, the tower and the valley opening below form a landscape where history, nature and spirituality overlap naturally.
